Fellowship Overview
This residency program does not just offer a retreat; it provides a vibrant platform for writers to focus on their projects with the added benefit of financial support. With a generous grant of 45,000 AED, the fellowship aims to alleviate financial pressures, allowing recipients to concentrate fully on their creative endeavours.
Eligibility and Creative Scope
The fellowship is open to a broad spectrum of creative writers, including:
- Novelists
- Short story writers
- Playwrights
- Poets
- Scriptwriters
Your project can explore themes related to Africa and the African diaspora, with the possibility of publishing through The Africa Institute’s publications program. The fellowship is particularly interested in projects that can be translated into theatre and film scripts, offering support not just for textual publications but also in facilitating productions.
Language and Location
The proposed project should be written in Arabic or English, although submissions in other languages will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Selected recipients will be invited to Sharjah, UAE, for a three-month residency to focus on their work, offering a unique cultural immersion and creative development opportunity.
Selection Criteria
A committee of esteemed writers and peers from The Africa Institute will review all applications. Selection will be based on:
- The quality and originality of the proposal
- The project’s significance and relevance
- The feasibility of completing the project within the residency timeframe
